Become a volunteer FAQ

1. I read that freewill workers stay for min 3 to max 6 months. Are there freewill workers that stay any longer?

Yes they do, but initially they are here for 3- 6 months, they go home and then we re-evaluate and if positive, volunteers come back for sometimes 1, 2 or even more years.

2. How do I arrange a place to stay? Do you have a place for me to stay? How expensive is a place to stay? Is that place nearby Rehoboth children’s home?

All volunteers stay on site. They pay 500 Rand per month. They have their own bedroom and then a communal living area and kitchen/ bathrooms.

3. Are there any holiday days for volunteers? Does Rehoboth close for holidays in a year or not at all? Is it possible to ask for a week off sometimes?

Per 3 months work, a volunteer gets 1 week holiday time. Rehoboth is always open as the kids are always here, so work is always on going during work days and volunteers are rostered in for weekend duty as well.

4. How does a day look like at Rehoboth (programme of the day)? Very different, we look at each volunteers talents and then plan the days, most volunteers are helpers in the crèche in the mornings, help out with homework in the afternoons, help with sports, take children on outings and on top of that, whereever their talents lie, the rest is filled in.

5. How much money do I need to take care of myself besides the 500 rand for accommodation and light, food, transportation etc?

Usually volunteers use about 3000 Rand per month, this includes the rent. If you want to go on holiday those costs need to be added.

6. What is the average age of volunteers?

Ranging from 18 years to 70! Never to old to serve, but you need to have a valid driver's license, so you can be too young to serve.

7. Is it possible that when I arrive, that someone comes and pick me up from the airport or from another place?

Yes, we usually pick up the volunteer from the airport unless they choose to take a bus to Port Shepstone.

8. Do you need any reference from my pastors or from a Bible school?

Yes, we need you to fill in the application forms and have your 2 references (one from pastor/ bible school, and one from a friend).

9. I do not have my driving license, is that a problem?

Yes this is a problem. It is a problem as we live 25 minutes outside town and all volunteers have to be able to be flexible to get around to do their own food shopping and to help out with driving for Rehoboth as this is one of the tasks to do. So you would need to be an experienced driver. The volunteer car has a manual gearbox so you will need to be able to drive this type of car before coming out.
